Sock Monkey Hat Pattern!!!

I have a pattern to share.  It's for this cute little guy here.

Here is a blurry picture of me wearing it.

It's fun!

Wanna make one?  It's really easy - mostly double crochets and then I get really wild and use some single crochets!
Here's the pattern I came up with:

Sock Monkey Hat

I used I Love This Cotton yarn.  The labels came off of the skeins so I'll have to get back to you on the exact colors.  I know the red is Burnt Sienna, and the brown is Chocolate.  I don't remember what the tan color is.  You'll need 1 skein of each color and a G/6-4.25mm hook.  Also, some black embrodery thread and needle and two  3/4"-1" black buttons

Gague : Rnds 1-2=2"

This hat will fit an average to large adult head.  If you have a smaller head, make the necessary adjustments (if you know how), or wait just a bit and I will give you those measurements.  The hat is really loose on my head, so I'll be working on a smaller version of the hat as well as a child's version and a baby's version.  So, Stay tuned!

For the hat:

Using your red yarn Ch 3, join with a sl st to first ch to form a ring
Rnd1: Ch2 (counts as fitst dc), 9 dc in ring,  Join with sl st to top of begining dc (10dc)
Rnd2: Ch2, dc in same st, 2 dc in every st around. Join (20dc)
Rnd 3: Ch2, 2dc in next st , *dc in next st, 2 dc in next st * Repeat * to * around. Join (30dc)
Rnd 4: Ch2, dc in in next st, 2 dc in next st *dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat * to * around. Join. Tie off (40dc)
Rnd 5: Join tan yarn with sl st.  Ch2, dc in next 2 st, 2 dc in next st *dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat * to * around.  Join.  Tie off (50dc)
Rnd 6: Join brown yarn with sl st.  Ch2, dc in next 3 st, 2 dc in next st *dc in next 4 st, 2 dc in next st* Repeat * to * around. Join (60 dc)
Rnd  7-13: dc in each dc
Rnd 14: 1 sc in each dc around

For the mouth:

With red yarn, ch 16
Rnd 1: Now, skipping the first st, sc in the back of each ch st across.  You'll end up sc into the post of the st.  Pull up one strand of yarn.  (15sc)
When you get to the end, ch1, then continuing in the same direction (do not turn!) sc into each ch across.  Now you're in the front of the st so you'll pull up both strands of yarn for each st - like a regular sc.
When you get to the end, ch1 then sl st into the begining sc going across the back of the
Rnd 2: sc into each sc.  When you get to the ch1 on each end, sc twice.  Join, tie off.
Rnd 3: Join tan yarn with sl st.  Ch1 (counts as first sc), then sc into each sc around.  2 sc on each side of the 2 sc done into the  ch1 from the previous rnd.  (Make sense?  I didn't take notes when doing this part because I wasn't sure it would work.  I'm going off memory (and looking at the hat) here.  So, just ask if it's super confusing.)  When you get around, join.
Rnd 4:  Ch1 (counds as first sc), sc into each sc around.  This time, 2 sc between each 2 sc from the previous rnd.  Again, just ask if it's confusing.  Join and tie off.

For the ears:
Make 2

Here, we'll be working rows instead of rounds

With brown yarn, ch3.  Join with sl st to first ch to form a ring.
Row 1:  Ch2 (counts as first dc) 7 dc into ring  (8 dc) turn
Row 2:  Ch2, dc into same st.  2 dc into each st across (16dc) tie off.

Assembly:

Lay the mouth just above the last row of the hat.  Carefully (both the mouth and hat wiggle around a lot) use a yarn needle and coordinating yarn and back stitch around both the red and tan parts of the mouth.  I did the red first.  I thought it set it up to be easier to attach the tan part of the mouth to the hat.

Now, lay your hat flat with the mouth up.  Position the ears just below the tan stripe on each side of the "head".  Using a yarn needle and brown yarn whip stitch the ears onto the hat.   Make sure the ears are secure, but don't bunch too much of the hat into your stitch.

Attach your button eyes above the mouth with black embrodery thread.  Use a back stitch to make a line across your monkey's mouth and give him/her some line nostrils.

Enjoy your hat!!
Wear it out on the town, take a picture and send it in to me.  I'll post the pictures here!!

  24. Just made this hat last night. Couldn't understand some of the directions, but did my own thing and it looks adorable. I did make a child size. I wasn't sure what hook you used, it was bigger than mine since by the time I got to row 13 it was no way big enough.

Thanks for the pattern. I was impressed by how quickly I worked it up. I had it done in about 3 hours.

  34. All I did was center the mouth where I wanted it and did a running stitch around the edge in the same yarn I made the mouth with. For the ears, I whip stitched them on. To be honest, I figured it out as I went. Good luck! :)
